Nobody else except for Catherine and I had been to Mercato before. Ron and Ellen live in Kent, Ct (for the summers), and Portia and Jared live in Catskill. It seemed like a reasonable distance for everybody as a place to eat. The food was basically good. I had the Orecchiette special, which tasted very good except for the sausage, either because it had gristle in it or because the casing was much too touch made it unpleasant to eat.</text>

I received a text from Douglas Degges saying how sorry he was to hear about Tom's death. It was like getting hit in the head. We picked up Diane Neumaja at the bus station in New Paltz on the way to the cemetery. Bob Mangold and Sylvia Plimack Mangold followed us in their car. We met up with them at a gas station in New Paltz. As we neared where the cemetery was supposed to be, we couldn't find it. It turned out Joyce (Robins) had accidentally given us a slightly different address. I started to knock on doors to ask for directions. It was hard to find anyone at home. At a house that turned out to be empty, I slipped, trying to step up on a porch (I didn't see any steps) and fell and rolled. Everyone watching thought the roll was on purpose because it looked like how you were told to fall. I hurt my ribs, which I still feel now that it is a few weeks later. A man in a gas station gave us the final correct directions to the cemetery. Joyce asked if I would be one of the pallbearers. I said sure and was hoping my fall wouldn't make it too difficult. It didn't. See the previous three entries.</text>

<text>Tom died on May 9, 2019. We were on a plane taxiing in at JFK on our way home from Sweden. It didn't. See the previous entry and the following two entries.</text>

<text>Once we left Uppsala, we headed to Stockholm, we arrived in the afternoon, and Rasimus dropped us off at our hotel. We met him later for dinner at KC Artists Bar and Restaurant. He had arranged for a group of people to go out to dinner together that night. These were mostly artists who had had shows at Galleri Se Konst. Bengt's work was hanging in the restaurant. It seemed that he hadn't seen them there as of yet. Christina, who sat opposite me, told me the story of the building where we were eating. It belongs to an arts organization (of which she is a member). In the past, these were studios (possibly live-work studios). Now in addition to the restaurant, there are galleries on the upper floors. Ase, who was sitting next to Christina, is an archivist as well as being an artist. Catherine (Murphy) was struck by the fact that it seemed that all the artists at dinner had two or three children. It was explained to her that because of "free" health and dental care as well as daycare, having children was more financially possible. Because he had a three-hour drive back to Falun, Rasimus left before the rest of us. See the previous two entries.</text>

See the following two entries.</text>

<text>We had to leave Richard Galloway's studio, leaving enough time to get to the Carl Larsson historical site by 4 pm. Rasimus arranged for us to hook up with a 4 pm tour in English. Right from the beginning, the tour guide's presentation seemed off. In the first room, he talked about the rarity of a woman, Karin Larsson, attending an art school in that period and having an art career. He then made some reference to that situation being the same as today. But it is not, for all intents and purposes, the same. In leaving that room, Catherine (Murphy), had enough of it and decided to sit out the rest of the tour. This opportunity gave me license to correct several misapprehensions that the guide had conveyed in his presentation (if I had done this in front of Catherine, it would have made her feel self-conscious). I tried to do so "gently." We both felt kind of bad for the tour guide. In addition to having incorrect information, he worked very hard to be entertaining. He also made Larssons' life seem trivial and talked to the group as if we were all 12-year-olds. Luckily, the couple and their children in this picture were also on this tour. So maybe they took better to the guides oratory style than we did. Considering that I hadn't previously spoken with these people and didn't know them, I would have ordinarily entered this photograph into the "Chance Encounters" section of this site. But I wanted to include this entry with the other entries from Sweden.</text>

<text>After leaving Gunilla Lunstedt's house, we headed to Jordi Arkö's house in Garsås. Jordi lives in a beautiful house by lake Siljana. His family has lived there for generations, so he owns about three buildings. He lives in is his studio and a house built by his grandfather. His wife is a journalist and was on location in Jerusalem at the time of our visit. Axel works in technology. After visiting for a while, we sat down for lunch. Jordi made us vegetable lasagna, and his son Axel made carrot salad. We brought a Princess Cake for dessert. I had read about these before we left for Sweden and wanted to taste it. Jordi insisted we take the remaining half with us. So we brought it to Richard Galloway's. There was also a selection of flatbreads, one made locally. We visited both of Jordi's studios, and he very generously gave us some prints. We mailed them home from the hotel in Stockholm. At a certain point, we had to leave to get to Richard Galloway's studio. See next entry</text>

<text>We arrived in Stockholm on Thursday, May 2nd. John Rasimus picked us up at the airport in Stockholm and drove the 2 and 1/2 hours to Falun. He dropped us off at our hotel, the Bergmastaren. The hotel, a cashless establishment (typical in Stockholm), served breakfast and dinner. The hotel contributed some of the cost for the rooms to the Galleri Se Konst. The Galleri provided the rest. It was a smallish hotel and a lovely place to stay. The next day, Friday, Rasimus picked us up at 10 am. We all spent the morning organising and hanging the show. Catherine and I gave our input into where the drawings should go. Rasimus and Gunilla did the physical hanging. When the show installation was completed, we all went to lunch at the Dalarnas Museum, the location of my lecture.</text>
