I passed out and Cathy called 911. Our house is set back from the road so Cathy (Murphy) went to the end of our driveway and flagged the ambulance as they were starting to pass by our house. The EMTs couldn't revive me at the house so they took me to the ambulance and off to St. Francis Hospital. Our tenant, Roberta Crossly drove with Cathy behind the ambulance. Cathy was highly upset and because the ambulance was driving so slowly she was afraid I had died. It turned out they were going slowly so they could try and revive me on the way. The first doctor on call in the emergency room couldn't revive me so they called the second doctor on call, who luckily was a pulmonary specialist. He did revive me and inserted a ventilator to keep me breathing. Dr. Forst told Cathy that there was about a thirty seconds to a minute window left to revive me. He also told her that I could have suffered brain damage from being unconscious so long and might not even know who I am. Cathy was able to get in touch with Barbara Page who met her at the hospital and was a great support for Cathy. In the morning I awoke. I mouthed (as best as I could) I love you, to Cathy and the nurse asked if I wanted a pad and paper, I did. The first thing I wrote was, "Take my picture!), Cathy know immediately that my brain was fine, at least back to my normal. I wanted to see what I looked like with tubes attached to me. Cathy called Dixie Sheridan at about 6:00am who came to the hospital and took photographs of me. They are sad images and Cathy has never looked at them. Dr. Forst became my pulmonary doctor until his until his untimely death in 2011. I was moved after a few days from intensive care into an interim section of the hospital. There was a phone in that room, which I used , for one thing, to arrange to have my classes covered at Vassar. It was nearing the end of the term so this was essential. I was able to arrange for Joe Smith to teach my classes for the remainder of the term. When Cathy realized i was making business calls so soon she asked the nurses to remove the phone. While in the hospital I did drawings By the time I was released I needed a second wheelchair to carry all my stuff, art supplies, books, magazines, etc. The phone messages included here are some from concerned friends who couldn't reach Cathy directly.
