On Saturday night we went to the Guthrie to see Caroline and Change and out to dinner with Alexis at Vincent's. Saturday morning there was a brunch at the home of Lisa and Pat Denzer. Some of the artist went by an earmarked bus and they are waiting here for it to leave. Cathy and I had rented a car to ride around with Alexis, so we went by car. He arranged dinner at Mole Mole. For the past years, we have been having large dinners of around 20 people after the artist lectures. Peter went to a dinner recently, which was much smaller and he thought it was better. So he told the students that the first five who signed up could come to dinner. Three students signed up. One of the students at dinner mentioned that some of the other students thought it was too much trouble to go to the building where the sign-up sheet was located. Because the signup was located in the same building where their studios are, this was a bit troubling to hear. I also felt that it indicated that some of the students who attended previous dinners were not enthusiastic enough to make any effort beyond simply showing up. Despite my feelings about all of this, the smaller dinner was more enjoyable and allowed everyone to take part in the conversations and at least hear what other people were saying. Sophia gave a good, well-prepared lecture.]]> We all met at Mole Mole before the majors and correlates critique. We discussed staffing issues for the future. Part of this had to do with what we would request from the Dean's office in addition to requesting that my line be continued. A few weeks ago, I gave notice to the Dean, the head of the department, and the President that I was retiring from school at the end of the next academic year. We had vegetarian tacos in addition to beverages.]]> Yun-Fei Ji came to Vassar to give a talk on his work as well as to do critics with some of the studio majors. When we went back to Montreal some time later it was gone.]]> About two weeks ago, we all decided we'd go to Montreal again this year. We left at 9:30 am on Saturday morning to drive to Montreal. The plan, as usual, was to meet Billy (William Finn) and Arthur (Salvadore) at the Bear cafe in Pottersville, NY. Billy and Arthur left for Montreal from Pittsfield, MA. They left quite a bit earlier than was planned, so they wound up waiting for us at the Bear Cafe, for something like an hour. Billy had breakfast before we got there, and Arthur just had coffee. It was lunchtime for everyone. See the following three entries.]]> We arrived at the Gault Hotel at about 5 pm. Arthur (Salvadore) and Billy (William Finn) arrived ahead of us. On our way to the Pont Champagne, we missed an exit and had to get back on the rather treacherous highway. It was snowing heavily, so it was hard to see where we were going. We got back on track in about 20 minutes. After settling in at the hotel, we headed out to dinner. We went to the Park Japanese Restaurant. I had read about it online. We got there about the time of our reservation (about 6:45pm). The restaurant was quite full with lots of well dressed young people. The design of the restaurant was awful. It looked fine, but the arrangement of the tables left no room to walk to your table without excusing yourself or bumping into the backs of chairs. The food was quite good, but we wouldn't go back here because of how uncomfortable the spatial arrangements were.
