<dcterms:description>Tom died on May 9, 2019. We were on a plane taxiing in at JFK on our way home from Sweden. I received a text from Douglas Degges saying how sorry he was to hear about Tom's death. It was like getting hit in the head. We picked up Diane Neumaja at the bus station in New Paltz on the way to the cemetery. Bob Mangold and Sylvia Plimack Mangold followed us in their car. We met up with them at a gas station in New Paltz. As we neared where the cemetery was supposed to be, we couldn't find it. It turned out Joyce (Robins) had accidentally given us a slightly different address. I started to knock on doors to ask for directions. It was hard to find anyone at home. At a house that turned out to be empty, I slipped, trying to step up on a porch (I didn't see any steps) and fell and rolled. Everyone watching thought the roll was on purpose because it looked like how you were told to fall. I hurt my ribs, which I still feel now that it is a few weeks later. A man in a gas station gave us the final correct directions to the cemetery. Joyce asked if I would be one of the pallbearers. I said sure and was hoping my fall wouldn't make it too difficult. It didn't. See the following three entries.</dcterms:description>

<dcterms:description>We had to leave Richard Galloway's studio, leaving enough time to get to the Carl Larsson historical site by 4 pm. Rasimus arranged for us to hook up with a 4 pm tour in English. Right from the beginning, the tour guide's presentation seemed off. In the first room, he talked about the rarity of a woman, Karin Larsson, attending an art school in that period and having an art career. He then made some reference to that situation being the same as today. But it is not, for all intents and purposes, the same. In leaving that room, Catherine (Murphy), had enough of it and decided to sit out the rest of the tour. This opportunity gave me license to correct several misapprehensions that the guide had conveyed in his presentation (if I had done this in front of Catherine, it would have made her feel self-conscious). I tried to do so "gently." We both felt kind of bad for the tour guide. In addition to having incorrect information, he worked very hard to be entertaining. He also made Larssons' life seem trivial and talked to the group as if we were all 12-year-olds. Luckily, the couple and their children in this picture were also on this tour. So maybe they took better to the guides oratory style than we did. Considering that I hadn't previously spoken with these people and didn't know them, I would have ordinarily entered this photograph into the "Chance Encounters" section of this site. The hotel, a cashless establishment (typical in Stockholm), served breakfast and dinner. The hotel contributed some of the cost for the rooms to the Galleri Se Konst. The Galleri provided the rest. It was a smallish hotel and a lovely place to stay. The next day, Friday, Rasimus picked us up at 10 am. We all spent the morning organising and hanging the show. Catherine and I gave our input into where the drawings should go. Rasimus and Gunilla did the physical hanging. Right after dinner, we followed Tom and Joyce in our car because they wanted to show us something. We went to Applestone Meat Co. It was really something- a bit like the old Horn and Hardart Automats with glass doors that you can open when you have put money in a slot. Applestone's is open 24 hours a day. I am not sure of the exact story, but it goes roughly like this. Fleishers Grass-Fed Butcher was in Rhinebeck at some point and closed some time ago. They were also in Kingston, I think, after Rhinebeck. It was owned and run by a couple. Kingston also closed. Then they opened Applestone in Stone Ridge. Somewhere in all of this, the couple separated. I think the wife may have been the person who ran the Stone Ridge store. And her husband opened a store in Brooklyn. I think I remember that his father or grandfather had a butcher shop. When the store was in Rhinebeck, we went to it from time to time. I cannot vouch for this narrative, but some of it is correct. Postscript: Tom called to tell us that someone from Butterfield called him because I had left my glasses there. Judy Linn picked them up and gave them to me at the Vassar Student Majors' Critique on March 27th.</dcterms:description>

Shane and I had run into each other periodically at Vassar. Bryce Daniel, a student in his documentary film class, made a short film about me (see the Bryce Daniel entry from October 14, 2016). I had met Shane's wife, Xinran, briefly on campus. Cathy and I decided that it would be nice to meet Elena and David for dinner since we hadn't seen them for a while, and also invite Shane to see if he and Xinran would like to attend with the four of us. It seemed like a good group of people. So we all met for dinner at Mercato, which turned out to be a good fit. I think everyone had a good time. Lots for everyone to talk about.nI had forgotten my camera, and the conditions for photographing with my phone weren't great. So I wound up taking some quite poor photographs. But combined as GIF, they turned out reasonably. Shane's email from later that evening mentioned that Francesco Butoni, the chef-owner of Mercato, was on the "Beat Bobby Flay" television cooking show last week. Bobby Flay won because the judges thought Francesco's seafood d'Avalos was under seasoned.
